Shop with a plan

Before you start shopping, make a plan! Plan out exactly what you need and set a suggested budget so there are no surprises when it comes time to buy. Most teachers post lists of classroom supplies, but you won’t use all of them on the first day. Figure out which school supplies are absolute must-haves for the first few weeks of school and plan to set a budget for non-essentials later in the school year.

Always choose quality

Think long term. Buy quality items that will last more than one school year. Think of it as an investment. The longer they last, the more money you’ll save over the rest of the school year.

Combine savings

If you have multiple children and they each have a separate list of school supplies, you will need to combine them all into one master list. Calculate the total number of notebooks needed. Do the same thing for calculators, pencils, rulers and everything else.

When you get to the store, it will be easier to pick up a bunch of items and then go back and forth to fill out each child’s list. Then, when you get home, you can use their own lists to separate the items and hand them out to each child. This can also save you money, as there are usually deals on binders, paper, pencils and other supplies. Often, you can buy a pack of ten folders for less than the price you would pay for a single folder.
